Weak exports swung the South African trade account into a deficit in August while demand for credit was at its lowest rate since 1966, suggesting no swift spending recovery will lift the economy out of a slump.

The South African Revenue Service on Wednesday said the trade account recorded a deficit of R1,98-billion in August after three months of surpluses including R447-million in July.

State-owned development finance institution, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has officially launched its Mpumalanga regional office.

The Nelspruit-based office brought the IDC closer to existing and potential business partners in Mpumalanga would proactively identify and drive new business development and opportunities, handle and process enquiries and applications for finance and it will provide basic loan application assessments.
